Despite Rachel’s assurances that she won’t neglect her, Ellen’s manner becomes more and more brittle. When Tom and Rachel suggest the house – much too big for one person – should be sold, Ellen reacts violently. Tom receives a phone call reminding him that he’s supposed to be at an important meeting, and rushes off, somewhat to Rachel’s consternation. The situation between the two women becomes even more tense, and Rachel starts to think that there is something Ellen is not telling her about the circumstances of her father’s death. Ellen denies this but is clearly prevaricating.
