olympus-the-musical
Olympus The Musical - A Race Against Time

On the eve of the (2012) Olympic Games, Britain’s golden hope, Dimitry Raphael, is preparing for the greatest moment of his life: lighting the Olympic Flame before the eyes of the world. Arrogant to other, off-hand to his fiancé and seemingly untouchable, Dimitry is unwillingly taking part in a light-hearted charity film shoot outside Olympic headquarters when a freak bolt of lightning strikes him down.

As the world watches, Dimitry falls into a coma.

But Dimitry does not die. Instead, he wakes in another world.

Thrown back to 780 BC, onto the slopes of Mount Olympus, Dimitry finds himself invisible to most mortals and mistaken by the gods for Hermes, the divine messenger. Around him, the ancient Olympic Games are beginning: a dazzling world of ceremony, rivalry, song, dance, ritual and danger, where the fate of Athens and Sparta hangs by a thread.

At the heart of this world are two young lovers divided by politics, pride and blood: Peleus, a Spartan wrestler of courage and passion, and Thetis, the beautiful daughter of a powerful Athenian household. Their love is immediate, forbidden and perilous. To Dimitry’s astonishment, Thetis bears an uncanny resemblance to his fiancée, Aimee, who remains at his hospital bedside in (2012), reading to him, willing him to wake.

Guided by the eccentric healer Asclepios, watched and manipulated by the gods, Dimitry begins to understand that his journey home is tied to what happens to Peleus and Thetis. Zeus wants their union to heal the enmity between Athens and Sparta, while Hera, Aphrodite, Athene and the other gods each pursue their own designs. Dimitry, caught between divine command and human compassion, must learn what it means to be selfless.

The ancient Olympic stadium bursts into life with celebration, contest and spectacle. The flame is lit. The crowds roar. The athletes compete. But beneath the pageantry, danger is gathering. Peleus is distracted by his love for Thetis, enraging his Spartan companion Nestor. Thetis’ brother Telemon and father Cadmos see Peleus not as a suitor, but as an enemy. When love crosses the boundary between Athens and Sparta, rivalry turns lethal.

As Dimitry moves between visions of the ancient world and glimpses of his hospital room in (2012), the two realities begin to echo one another. Aimee’s voice reaches him across time. The myths he once thought belonged to books become living, breathing people before him. The boy Homer, fragile yet gifted, seems able to sense Dimitry’s presence and carries within him the future memory of legends yet to be written.

In Act Two, the stakes darken. The Olympic contest descends into violence when Telemon murders Nestor, sending Peleus into a spiral of grief and vengeance. Dimitry, now visible to Peleus as “Hermes”, desperately tries to prevent further bloodshed. But every action has a consequence. The gods warn him that mortals must make their own choices — yet Zeus gives him a cryptic command: “Choose Peleus.”

As Cadmos disowns his murderous son and condemns Thetis for loving a Spartan, Dimitry and Asclepios attempt a desperate plan to reunite the lovers. Thetis will take a potion that makes her appear dead, allowing her to escape her father’s control and flee with Peleus. But the message must reach Peleus in time.

Lost in the woods while searching for him, Dimitry faces the true test of his journey. Homer suffers a seizure. Dimitry must choose: carry the vital message to Peleus and save the lovers, or save the child in front of him. Although aware of Zeus’ command, he makes the only choice his heart will allow. He chooses Homer.

The message never reaches Peleus.

Believing Thetis dead, Peleus enters the crypt and takes his own life beside her. When Thetis wakes and finds him dead, the ancient tragedy is complete. The gods gather. The lovers, the fallen, the grieving and the living stand at the edge of myth, where love, sacrifice and destiny meet.

Only then does Asclepios reveal the truth: by choosing Homer, Dimitry acted selflessly and from his own heart.

In a final act of divine grace, the gods raise the dead and open a path through time. Thetis steps through — becoming Aimee at Dimitry’s bedside in 2012. Dimitry wakes from his coma as the London Olympic Opening Ceremony begins. On the television, the figures of the ancient past are transformed into the living pageant of the modern Games. The Olympic Flame is lit once more.

As the stage blazes with the light of the five Olympic rings, OLYMPUS becomes a sweeping musical celebration of love, sacrifice, sport, storytelling and the eternal human hunger to reach higher.

Part time-travel romance, part mythic tragedy, part Olympic spectacle, OLYMPUS offers producers a bold and emotionally charged theatrical event: ancient Greece and modern Britain colliding in a story filled with gods, athletes, lovers, healers, children and an anthemic score built for scale. It is a musical about the flame that passes from hand to hand, heart to heart, and the healing power of love.
