Alan Richardson
Alan was born and still lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. His interest in amateur theatre started back in 1969, when he was a mere youth of 20 years. After serving his theatrical apprenticeship with local group Edinburgh People's Theatre, he moved on to become a founder member of Edinburgh Youth Theatre. Since 1978, he has mostly worked with the Mercators, one of Edinburgh's oldest drama groups. During his fifty-plus years in amateur theatre, he has acted in over eighty plays and directed over forty. He’s also been a film extra and appeared four times in the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo, playing before a total audience of over half a million.
Since his first play surfaced in 1973, he has won nine playwriting competitions including four times winner of the Scott Salver for the best original play entered in the SCDA One Act Play Festival and, one big time, the Geoffrey Whitworth Trophy for the best original play entered in the British One Act Festival. His one act plays have won numerous awards at Drama Festivals including winning play, best director and best actor. Several plays have been translated and one has been adapted into an Opera.
Total performances number over 1200, mainly in the UK, including twelve Edinburgh Festival Fringe Productions, but also in Australia, Canada, Cyprus, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Holland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Spain, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the USA.
