Frequently asked questions
What are performance royalties?
Performance royalties are fees paid to the author, composer, or rights holder of a play or musical when their work is performed publicly. They ensure creators are fairly compensated for the use of their work.
Do I need to apply for royalties separately from the performance licence?
No - it’s all included in one process.
When you request a Royalty Quotation & Licence Application (RQLA), you will receive the RQLA, which combines both the performance licence and the associated royalty terms.
How are royalties calculated?
Royalties are usually based on:
- The number of performances
- Ticket prices
- Seating capacity of the venue
Each show may have a minimum royalty per performance, and you’ll be quoted the full cost before anything is confirmed.
When do I need to pay royalties?
Royalties must be paid in advance, before your licence is issued and materials are released. Payment confirms your right to perform the script on the agreed dates.
What happens after I apply?
Once we receive your application, we’ll review the details and send you a quote that includes the licence fee and royalties. You’re not committed until you accept the quote and payment is made.
Can I stream or record a virtual performance of a StageScripts play or musical?
Yes – virtual performances are possible, but specific arrangements must be made. This includes livestreams, recorded broadcasts, and any form of online access. You’ll need to let us know in your licence application that your performance is virtual.
Royalty rates and licence terms may differ depending on how the performance is shared (e.g. live vs on-demand, private link vs public broadcast), and we’ll advise you of the relevant permissions and costs.
Are there different rules for schools, colleges or universities?
Yes – educational settings such as schools, colleges and universities may be subject to special licensing terms. These can include reduced royalty rates, flexible performance arrangements, or specific restrictions depending on the production.
Be sure to let us know the nature of your organisation when applying, and we’ll provide the appropriate guidance and options for your production.
