Duration: 40 mins approx

Bill Snell | Drama | One Act | 3m, 3f

Short synopsis

A poignant war time drama, ‘Loss’ explores the strains on the marriage of Billy and Mary when their eldest son is killed. This loss is exacerbated by the fears of losing their only surviving son who is now involved in the conflict. Billy and Mary struggle with grief and fear and their relationship suffers dramatically. We follow their attempts to deal with their loss and their constant dread that another ‘telegram’ may arrive.

A poignant and realistic war time drama. Simple to set in World War 1 but transferable to any war time situation.

To lose any child is an immense challenge for any parent but the potential to lose your other remaining child creates pressures that any married couple may find insurmountable.

Billy married Mary and took on the responsibility of her son Arthur from a previous relationship, they later have a son of their own Jim. Their happy marriage experiences huge strains after Arthur dies from his wounds at the front. Their grief is exacerbated by fears for Jim who is now also serving his country.

Mary is finding her grief almost too much to bear, can't accept that Billy can be feeling the same level of pain for the loss of his adopted son and her constant fear for Jim is now having a disastrous effect on their relationship. Billy lives in daily fear for Jim, has doubts about his support for the war, and now is desperately trying to keep his marriage together.

Mary receives support from her friends Gwladys and Edith who fear for her well-being but not all of their advice is welcome. Billy also shares his feelings with friends George and Tom but this leads to violent political differences with Tom and the sharing of his intimate fears and revelations with George.

The play explores their relationship, their grief, fears and anxieties. Will Jim survive or will yet another dreaded ‘telegram’ arrive?  Is there a way to find each other again or will their Loss be too much for them both? A dramatic piece offering each actor a challenging and rewarding role.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
