Short synopsis

The Black Fairy isn’t invited to Mirabel’s christening and casts a spell so that on her sixteenth birthday the Princess will prick her finger and die. Thanks to the White Fairy, she falls into a sleep from which she must be wakened by a Prince’s kiss. Nany Bunion and Crumble are sent to find the Prince, who is already on his way. He wakens Mirabel and the wicked Queen turns into an ogre.

King Pelinor and Queen Pelinor send messengers throughout the kingdom to invite the Seven Fairies of the Realm to Princess Mirabel’s christening. Grizabella the Black Fairy doesn’t receive an invitation, but arrives anyway, casting a spell so that on her sixteenth birthday the Princess will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. White Fairy Genevra intervenes, changing the spell so that Mirabel won’t die but will fall into a deep sleep from which she can only be woken by a Prince’s kiss, and King Pelinor orders that all spinning wheels in the kingdom must be destroyed. Meanwhile, in another palace in another Kingdom, Queen Ermintrude urges Prince Marmaduke to marry, giving him six months to find a suitable bride.

On her sixteenth birthday Mirabel pricks her finger on a spinning wheel which has been hidden by Grizabella and her servants Catflap and Lumpkin, and falls into a deep sleep. Genevra casts a spell so that the whole court will also remain asleep while Nanny Bunion and Crumble are on a mission to find the necessary Prince, and creates an Enchanted Forest to surround the palace.

Grizabella sends Catflap and Lumpkin to prevent anyone finding the prince, but Bunion and Crumble have already encountered Marmaduke. They pass through the Enchanted Forest, where Catflap and Lumpkin pretend to be ghosts but frighten themselves instead. Eventually Bunion, Crumble and Marmaduke arrive at the palace, Genevra removes her spell, the court awakens, and Marmaduke wakes Mirabel with a kiss.

The less familiar ending is based on Charles Perrault’s version of the fairy tale. Grizabella encourages Queen Ermintrude to reveal her hidden ogrish tendencies, sending Ermintrude to eat Mirabel. This is prevented by Genevra, Grizabella is banished from the kingdom and all ends happily.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
