Short synopsis

Tipp is married to Margaret. He is, by profession, a taxi driver although these days he drives reluctantly, choosing only the jobs he wants to. He spends his days in his armchair watching quiz shows and re-living the day he almost won through to the finals of ‘Mastermind’. Then one evening he gets a call that intrigues him: to take a passenger to the Tyne Tees Television Studios. The young girl has been selected to be in ‘The Big Market’ a new TV Soap based in the North East.

This play could easily fit within the romantic comedy genre if it was not for the unlikely protagonists.  It is a comedy which explores the complex relationships which can develop between the most unlikely of people through what was a chance encounter.

It focuses on various taxi journeys between Durham and Newcastle. Rachel is a new and aspiring actress who has moved from Hull to the North East to be in a new TV series.  Unfortunately, the days and hours are long, and Rachel does not drive. She plans to get herself a flat in the area but as a short-term measure she stays with friends at Durham University and engages Tipp, a taxi driver, to take her to and from work at the studios.  Out of the kindness of his heart Tipp decides to take on the work as her personal driver, rather than as a taxi driver, to help her to keep costs down.  In his spare time Tipp also decides to teach Rachel to drive.

As the play progresses, we begin to see a kind of attraction develop between the two characters, much to the concern of Tipp’s wife Margaret, who recognises a flaw in Tipp that she had seen many years earlier. In some ways she knows him better than he knows himself.

As Rachel’s soap role develops so too does her relationship with her leading character and the inevitable fall-out ensues. The journey Rachel and Tipp initially embarked on turns out to be a much longer journey than the initial fare from Durham to Newcastle and the couple find themselves on an emotional rollercoaster which can only end in one way.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
