Duration: Two Act

Philip Goulding & Alan Williams | Play with Music | Comedy Adaptation | Full-length | 4m/f

Short synopsis

Toad of Toad Hall follows the adventures of four best friends - Ratty, Mole, Badger and the irrepressible and irresponsible Toad. Philip Goulding’s adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s original story touches on themes of humility, generosity and the value of true friendship.

Adapted by Philip Goulding with music by Alan Williams

Meet the famous trickster of Toad Hall: the sharp-witted, finely groomed, incredible, magnificent, incomparable, munificent, marvellous Mr. Toad. A connoisseur of the finer things in life, Mr. Toad has gone and dug himself into a mole-hole that even he may not be able to escape from. After stealing one of the finest cars ever designed, Mr. Toad hurtles lickety-split along winding rural roads scaring the living daylights out of any poor creature that happens to be out attempting to enjoy the country air. Toot-toot! Inevitably, of course, Mr. Toad is apprehended by the heavy-handed rural police, and banged up for what could prove to be a good long while.

But all is not lost. With the help of a sympathetic friend Mr. Toad manages to break out of jail. But now Toad’s an infamous outlaw, bamboozling railway staff, hopping trains and river rafts, trying to out-scheme authority at every turn.

Meanwhile, when Toad is incarcerated, or barmily bounding about the countryside trying to save his trickster toady hide, the pack of faithful friends that he’s left behind fret about his welfare as the days and hours tick by. What’s worse, without Mr. Toad around, his pals Ratty, Badger and Mole haven’t been able to resist the scheming Stoats, Weasels and Wildwooders that have occupied Toad Hall!

Will this group of rogue rodents steal Toad’s home for good? Philip Goulding’s wildly hilarious adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s classic takes us on a thrilling countryside ride with the most comical creatures to show us that we really need to stick together if we don’t want things to fall apart.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
