Jessie's Tree

Duration: 55 mins approx

Bev Clark | Play | Drama | Young Cast | One Act | 11m, 11f

Short synopsis

A journey through the 20th century, seen through the eyes of young people. Themes of grief, war, growing-up and family history are explored over four time periods: the winter of 1918, the spring of 1940, the summer of 1967 and the autumn of 1999. From the end of the First World War until the dawn of the new Millennium this is a piece for young people aged 11-18 to commemorate and celebrate a century of learning about the way we are all connected.

In 1916 the old oak tree was struck by lightning and when Jessie’s brother Jack was killed at the Somme, she made it her only personal place to come and remember him.

It’s the day after Boxing Day 1918 and the war is over. Jessie meets Cecil who is mourning for his father, also killed in the war. Although their backgrounds are very different, these children find friendship and support in their shared grief.

The action moves to spring 1940 and Jessie’s children Bob and Margie meet two new evacuees by the old tree. Bob and Ralph are more interested in playing at “War” but Margie and Ivy form a friendship that will last throughout their childhood. They talk about the roles their parents must now take on and try to hold on to the innocence of childhood against a backdrop of conflict.

By summer 1967 the world is a very different place and young people are freely expressing their views and seeking new adventures. Margie’s son Stephen is now having to cope with the loss of Grandmother Jessie. Some of his friends are supportive but only Lorna really has the strength to help him through and find a future. The tree, which has been a burnt out carcass starts to sprout new shoots.

It is now 1999 and Jess and her friends are celebrating her birthday and Halloween by the old tree. She is the child of Steve and Lorna and has kept a keen interest in her family’s history- especially her great grandmother Jessie.  After lots of fun and banter the group are surprized by a gate-crasher – a young polish boy Carl who has a present for Jess – A story that will delight and amaze her.

They will all see a new millennium and look to an exciting future whilst keeping a firm foot in the past.

Although the scenes are connected, they could be performed as separate short pieces. Jessie’s Tree offers a great vehicle for drama, social history classes or remembrance commemoration events for senior youth groups or schools.

Please note there are references to drug-taking in Scene 3.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
