Beach Blanket 'TEMPEST'

Watkins & Harriott

Genre: Fantasy

Cast size: 14

Duration: 120 mins approx

Watkins & Harriott | Musical | Full-length | 5m, 4f, 5m/f

Short synopsis

A re-working of Shakespeare's The Tempest as a musical in the vein of ‘Return To The Forbidden Planet’ It's a stupendous show jam-packed with thumpingly catchy ballads and tunes, beautiful love duets, thrashing sixties rock, and even a visit from The Supremes. The central character is Vince Prospero; he is the 'Duke Of Rock ‘N Roll', a superstar of Elvis proportions, marooned on an island with his gorgeous daughter, Annette. Their ‘spirit’ is Gidget, a genie released not from a tree, but from a bottle. The ‘other resident’ is Moondoggie, a delinquent teenage punk biker. Just as in Shakespeare’s Tempest, a wild storm is whipped up to bring the evil brother and his cohorts to the island, with Vince Prospero setting up a series of tests, designed to reveal Tony Prospero’s true evil character.

In ‘Beach Blanket Tempest’, the central character is Vince Prospero; he is the Duke Of Rock ‘N Roll, a superstar of Elvis proportions. He too is marooned on an island with his gorgeous daughter, Annette. Their ‘spirit’ is Gidget, a genie released not from a tree, but from a bottle. She wants to be free and ride the wild surf of the world. The ‘other resident’ is Moondoggie, a delinquent teenage punk biker. Just as in Shakespeare’s tempest, a wild storm is whipped up in ‘BBT’ to bring the evil brother and his cohorts to the island, with Vince Prospero setting up a series of tests, designed to reveal Tony Prospero’s true evil character.

In the modern age, the most entertaining ‘tests’ are of course quizzes on television. So, true to form, the last part of BBT takes the form of a Giant Quiz Show where Tony Prospero and other contestants are invited to ‘come on down’! The chorus sings, “Will you take the great temptation?”, as the evil brother’s true character is laid bare.

Much in the vein of ‘Return To The Forbidden Planet’, ‘Beach Blanket Tempest’ is a stupendous show that is jam-packed with thumpingly catchy ballads and tunes, beautiful love duets, thrashing sixties rock, and even a visit from The Supremes.

The show was originally cast for a minimum of eight, but this new edition for schools and amateur groups has a chorus that becomes part of the tempest; spirits on the island; more Supreme Beings look-alikes; party animals, and members of the TV Studio audience.

Beach blankets by the way, are made from two normal-sized beach towels sewn together so that two people can sit or lie on them.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read in that then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (generally costing under half the price of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make a just sufficient quantity of copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Under this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of Perusal Material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as pdf files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as mp3 files and (where available) an mp4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired, licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights. (See 'Copyright Questions' below).

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
