Short synopsis

Set in 1959 England in the colourful era of Teddy-Boys & Judies, with their quiffs and bouffants. Billy, a guitar playing car mechanic, arrives on the scene and falls in love with Jan Burns, the boss's daughter; their relationship being helped along by garage foreman, Big Ted, and Jan's friend, Maureen. Billy and Jan regrettably take things too far, and Jan is packed off by Billy's boss, Arthur, to a private clinic in Switzerland. Billy is told nothing and, assuming Jan has dumped him, he leaves, and within six months becomes a pop star. Returning later for Ted and Mo's wedding, Billy finds out that his baby is to be adopted, and being an orphan himself, is determined to do the right thing by Jan and get their baby back. Arthur is forced to concede only when his wife takes a stand against him. Heart-warming, spirited and touching.

It's 1959 in England; just after the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll! 'Billy Buckett' is a musical with comedy, drama and pathos, set amongst the colourful era of Teddy-Boys & Judies.

'Billy Buckett' is a heart-warming, spirited and touching musical set in the late 50's - a time when teenagers were starting to shake off the conforming nature of the past, but having to live in a world of formality, strict parental control and unforgiving moral judgements.

Nineteen-year-old mechanic Billy Buckett oozes musical talent, rock n roll charisma and a couldn’t-care-less cool. Orphaned during the Blitz, the wanna-be pop idol yearns to swap his overalls for fame & fortune, but his soul is crying out for the love & acceptance he has been denied all his life (‘Mind Over Matters Blues’).

While he chases success, Billy needs to make a living so moves to Wickford, a small sleepy town in Essex, to apply for a job as an car mechanic (‘Wot’s Work’).

It is here that Billy meets the vivacious and beautiful Jan Burns who has just graduated from a posh girls’ boarding school. Jan empathises with Billy and captures his heart (‘Tender Is The Night’) but true love finds opposition in Jan’s father who is also Billy’s new boss, the powerful businessman Arthur Burns (‘Self-Made Man’).

Burns and his well-bred wife Helen want the very best for their middle-class daughter, and marriage to a going-nowhere ‘grease monkey’ is not part of their plan.

Aided and abetted by the un-PC garage-foreman Big Ted (‘A Girl Is Like A Car’) and Jan’s best friend, the rebellious Maureen (‘Feather On The Wind’), the young lovers carry on a clandestine love affair. But, they go too far, and when their secret slips, the consequences are devastating. Jan and Billy enter separate worlds of heartbreak and confusion (‘What’ll I Do’).

Billy fights back the only way he knows how – through rock ’n’ roll (‘Wreck Out Of My Heart’). But can he find the happiness he craves? Not if Arthur Burns can help it.

The 19 songs feature original music and ride a 50’s pop-pendulum from toe-tapping, hand-clapping, get-to-your-feet-and-dance numbers like ‘Dynamo’, ‘Daddy’ and ‘Who Were You With’, to the stunningly romantic ‘Tender Is The Night’, the soulful ‘Feather On The Wind’, and the reflective epiphany of ‘Photographs and Memories’.

Chorus of Teddy Boys and Judies, garridge lads, factory girls, doo-wop girls etc

"The original 1950’s inspired music was absolutely terrific and very well sung by the entire cast…. and was also in keeping with the British side of the world, not the American rock ‘n’ roll, which made it sound even more authentic. If you like Grease, Rock Around The Clock, Happy Days and rock ‘n’ roll, then you will thoroughly enjoy this show too." - Pauline Smith, Absolute Theatre Australia

"A brand new rock‘n’roll musical, an insight into love and family affairs in post-war England, ─ the adrenaline rush should send theatregoers home smiling so people at work will think they’re in love. As they ought to be, with this new show! This company acts, sings, dances with passion and commitment. Their joy rains over the audience. I applaud the rock band; the choreographer and the wardrobe personnel who, I suspect, wiped out several charity shops to find costumes right for 1959-60. Billy Buckett is a great night out!" - Jay McKee,Stage Whispers, Australia

"The show is a great deal of fun, with a live seven-piece rock ‘n’ roll band and a cast of wonderful singing, dancing actors. Get your friends together and organise a great entertaining night out. IT’S A MUST SEE!!!" - Pauline’s Dance Gig Guide"

"A fabulous show - a lovely feel-good storyline, well acted and beautifully sung by a high quality cast and chorus. Clever sets, smooth scene changes, great music played by a superbly competent band, loads of funny lines and it's child friendly too! DON’T MISS IT!" - The Roving Theatre Critic, SEQ Swing Dance Club"

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read in that then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (generally costing under half the price of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make a just sufficient quantity of copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Under this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of Perusal Material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as pdf files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as mp3 files and (where available) an mp4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired, licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights. (See 'Copyright Questions' below).

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
