Simon Brett & Chris Summerfield | Musical | Full-length | Principals: 3m, 4f Support: 1m/f
Short synopsis
Based on the radio and TV series the plot revolves around the relationship between three generations of the France family. Sarah often finds herself in the middle of things, not least because her daughter, Claire, lives upstairs and her mother, Eleanor, lives in the basement flat. Eleanor is ruthlessly cunning and takes every opportunity to get one over on Sarah. Anything told to her will, with her friend Valerie Brown's half sister, Mary's help, add to the local geriatric gossip. Clare is trying to be independent of her mother, but her relationship with her boyfriend is often in crisis. Through all this Sarah is having to come to terms with the death some years ago of her husband, and to find inner strength to face her new life, after Henry.
Synopsis
Characters
Music Player
This 'chamber' musical is based onSimon Brett’sradioand two times BAFTA Award nominee televisionseries, ‘After Henry’. It's easy to stage with a small cast and can be performed either with an orchestra or just a keyboard. The casting requirements involve three elderly actors who provide the majority of the comedy. Add to this the often strained relationship between a mother, her mother, and her daughter who are unashamedly middle of the middle class.
Sarah France’s doctor husband Henry was killed in a car crash when she was in her early forties, a couple of years before the action begins. Her attempts to deal with widowhood are not helped by the nosiness and demands of her mother Eleanor, who lives in the basement flat in the house, or the emotional traumas and moodiness of her nineteen-year-old daughter Clare, who’s got the top-floor flat.
Sarah is kept sane by the work she does helping in a bookshop run by her gay friend Russell. He acts as both a sounding-board and emotional support for her.
The story of the musical involves potential romances for all three women. Clare is being messed around by a boy called Greg, but she hasn’t got the confidence to tell him to get lost. Eleanor and her much-patronised friend Vera Poling (who is rich and lives in a care home called The Sycamores) are meanwhile both competitively interested in a charming elderly man called Vernon (who may not turn out to be all that he seems). And even Sarah’s loneliness is offered a lifeline in the handsome shape of a widower called Chris Wellington.
Is it long enough after Henry for her to allow a new man into her life? All of these emotional complications are untangled in this bittersweet inter-generational family musical.

Frequently asked questions
Can we try before we buy?
Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read in that then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (generally costing under half the price of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make a just sufficient quantity of copies to support rehearsals and performances.
All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Under this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of Perusal Material which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as pdf files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as mp3 files and (where available) an mp4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.
Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.
Do we need a Licence To Perform?
The simple answer is, yes.
Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired, licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights. (See 'Copyright Questions' below).
Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?
When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
