Starblaze is a contemporary rock musical designed for today’s school students.
It is a fantasy set in the future, consequently costuming and scenery can be designed in a variety of styles on a simple or elaborate scale depending on available resources. Similarly, although it can be staged with a relatively small cast, it is possible to considerably expand the cast numbers.
It tells the story of a group offemale freedom fighterson board the spaceship ‘Vigilant’. After a space battle they capture the evil dictator Odium and his Heavies. However, with the assistance of the traitorous genius Dr Sneech, Odium captures the ship and forces it to land on the Planet Zodark. All the pirates are taken under guard to Zodark City except Sandy, the daughter of the Captain who manages to escape. Alone and frightened in the outlands of Zodark she meets a young Zodark called Astro and after an initial period of mutual suspicion, the two become friends. However they are quickly captured by a band of roaming monsters called the Horriffs whose personal appearance is so repulsive that for years they have struck fear into all Zodarks. But it transpires that they are in fact ‘misunderstood monsters’ who simply want to be friendly to everyone.
Back in Zodark City, Odium is preparing to execute the pirates. When the Zodark leader protests, he too is condemned to die. Just as the Heavies are raising their weapons, the Horriffs, led by Sandy and Astro burst in, overcome the Heavies and capture Odium, whereupon peace and harmony is restored.
Each of the major groups in the story isdesigned specifically to appeal to school pupils. The main group, the Space Pirates, creates the opportunity for girls to play a female role in which singing and dancing is combined with drama on a group or individual scale. Similarly the Zodarks (the star people) appeal to girls who prefer a gentler role. The role of the Horriffs has proved to be very popular with both sexes as it involves acting the part of lumbering monsters whose fearsome appearance combined with their awkward antics invariably invokes a strong audience response. The paramilitary characteristics of the Heavies who guard the dictator Odium appeal particularly to boys.
In each of the groups there is ample opportunity for the development of cameo roles. The lead roles are principally designed for girls. Several (eg Sandy and Astro) involve acting and singing. Others, although having no solo numbers, do provide the opportunity for singing in choral parts if desired. Two lead roles are provided for boys - Odium (the dictator) who has one solo, and Cosmo (the Zodark leader).
Starblaze is a bright musical with catchy melodies that can be performed with a simple guitar/piano accompaniment or full instrumentation, and will definitely leave the audience humming on the way home. It is suitable for performance by students (aged 10+) or theatre groups seeking a production that is ideal for family audiences.

“We performed Starblaze last week, and it was a great success. We chose it because we'd been doing a term-long topic about space and because we had many talented girls (as well as boys) in our school who were very keen to take on exciting roles like space pirates!
We had a month or so to rehearse in school, after which we were lucky to have the theatre at a local secondary school to use for our big performance where we had an audience of about 250 clapping, laughing (at the right moments) and cheering throughout.
Our Dr Sneech was a particular hit, Odium relished the chance to be evil, and the Captain and Sandy (twin sisters!) showed just how good two eleven-year olds can be.
The overall message of the show was a wonderful way to end their primary school life. Many of them achieved more than they ever thought possible,
so it's definitely onwards and upwards now to their secondary schools!
So, thankyou for writing such an enjoyable show - perfect for our topic,
and for our talented youngsters."
Jonathan Hancock, Roberttown Junior School, Liversedge, West Yorkshire
"Our reasons for chosing Starblaze were following - we have quite skillful girls who needed challenging parts and one of the boys - the one who did Odium - has singing and acting ambitions as well, and the other guys wanted to have as much fun as possible. The topic was good, funny, as almost all in the group are about 18 years old and enjoy making fun of themselves.
We liked the idea of making some galactic costumes and most of all we enjoyed the music, rhythmic, rock, nice backing tracks which save the pain and money for finding musicians and we thought that this music and the topic would be enjoyable for our audience as well."
Michaela Kuttlerova, Dolce, Prague (The show was translated and presented in the Czech language)
"We had a fantastic time performing Starblaze, and actually managed to pull it together quickly which is a credit to the catchy music and words. We will definitely be looking at some of your other work for this year."
Anne Phillips Head Teacher (Kington Primary School)
"We had a great time working to present a production of Starblaze at Lakes Grammar. I actually did it in 1987 at Richmond High School and have been keen since then to do it again."
Trevor McGowan-SleeMusical Director, Lakes Grammar (New South Wales, Australia)

Frequently asked questions
Can we try before we buy?
Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read in that then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (generally costing under half the price of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make a just sufficient quantity of copies to support rehearsals and performances.
All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Under this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of Perusal Material which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as pdf files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as mp3 files and (where available) an mp4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.
Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.
Do we need a Licence To Perform?
The simple answer is, yes.
Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired, licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights. (See 'Copyright Questions' below).
Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?
When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
