Short synopsis

Every year Gregory Saxon, a travelling Salesman with a textile factory, visits an isolated and reclusive religious community where they buy their material for the year. Today he has turned up to deal with Sister Iris, as she bakes bread in the kitchen. But he has arrived at a moment of crisis – with Sister Louise in the Meeting House nearby, praying to God for guidance. Everybody is confronted with a crisis of faith.

Gregory Saxon is exhausted after a long road trip. Not only does he arrive at the isolated religious community with a suitcase full of swatches to show his clients, but he is anxious to be done. He arrives at the curiously quiet community, where he finds middle-aged Sister Iris busy in the kitchen baking bread – part of the daily domestic routine. No one else is there. Iris is keen he makes his presentation to her alone, and especially so when she discovers he is a father for the first time.

Gregory’s tiny new born baby has vomited over some of the swatches. As he continues, showing her each colour – Tangier, Flambeau, Carmolito,  Gabbro, Persephone – symbolising the choices available, Sister Iris breaks down – admitting the religious leader, Brother Jonathan, has died – throwing the entire community into chaos.

The scenes in the kitchen, as Sister Iris struggles to convey the depth of their crisis, are contrasted with scenes of young Sister Louise alone in the Meeting House, as she to starts to question the very basis of the community and their reason to stay together.

Eventually – almost arbitrarily – Sister Iris pulls back from the abyss and allows something like normal life to resume. She finishes baking the bread, she choices the colours for their material for the next year, she dismisses Gregory almost abruptly. But on leaving we discover her weeping into the swatch stained by his baby, as Sister Louise decides she can no longer support the status quo, as ‘every moment matters’

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
