Short synopsis

Belle’s father has fallen on hard times, and plucks a rose from a palace garden as a present for his daughter. The palace belongs to an ugly Beast who demands a life in return for the rose, but Belle saves her father’s life by consenting to live in the palace. When she eventually falls in love with Beast, he’s released from a magic spell and turns into a handsome prince.

Rosella introduces Gabrielle, a mischievous but resourceful maid in rich merchant Monsieur Villeneuve’s house. Villeneuve’s daughters Clementina and Nectarina see themselves as embodying perfection in womanhood and look down on everybody else, even their sister Belle. When wicked enchantress Maleva intervenes, Villeneuve falls on hard times and the family have move to the country and live on a farm.

On a journey to the city to try to restore his fortunes Villeneuve and his manservant Claude stay overnight in a palace in the woods where they’re looked after by servants Hermione and Hortense. Villeneuve plucks a rose from the garden as a present for Belle, but the palace belongs to an ugly Beast who gives him a chest of gold pieces but demands that one of Villeneuve’s daughters becomes his prisoner.

Despite her father’s protests, Belle consents to live in the palace. Hermione and Hortense reassure her that the Beast doesn’t intend to harm her. They give Belle a magic mirror in which she can see what’s happening in her home. Beast visits Belle regularly and eventually she comes to respect and like him. Beast proposes marriage, but Belle turns him down. The Beast agrees that Belle can visit her home for a week, giving her a magic ring which has the power to return her to his palace.

Clementina and Nectarina are now unhappily married, and are jealous of Belle’s apparent good fortune. Maleva intervenes, inciting the two sisters to prevent Belle returning to the palace by stealing the magic mirror. They’re prevented by Gabrielle and Claude. The sisters then try to steal the magic ring, but are again foiled by Gabrielle and Claude.

Belle returns to the palace where she realises she’s fallen in love with Beast. Maleva reveals that Beast had refuses to marry her, and in revenge had turned him into an ugly creature, but he has now been released from Maleva’s magic spell and turned into a handsome prince.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
