Puss In Boots (Gardner)

Bruce Gardner

Genre: Pantomime

Cast size: 14 +Chorus

Duration: Two Act

Bruce Gardner | Pantomime | Full-length | 8m, 3f, 1m/f +Chorus

Short synopsis

A delightful and lively pantomime with all the expected ingredients to delight your audience.

A traditional pantomime telling the fairy tale of the remarkable talking cat and his fine boots who secures his master's future by cunning, and then helps him to win the hand of King Richard’s daughter, the princess Deborah. Hero Chris Cross, son of a mill owner, and the rest of their large family struggle on in the land of Ponderham oppressed by an ogre, Griswald.

Griswald has long had designs of Deborah, but newly appointed hero Chris in his guise as the Marquis of Carabas has his own plans to marry the princess, much to Griswald’s annoyance.

King Richard employs Sally Slapper-Diddle (the Dame) as his cook and housekeeper, and Chester as his (inept) Jester. The two of them ensure there’s enough funny business interwoven into the story to keep the plot moving ahead (well, sort of).

Principals: 8m, 3f, 1m/f

  • Tom Cross - Father of three boys, a steady man, owner of the local mill. Wears comfortable country clothing, initially with a large apron.
  • Bobcat - Puss in Boots himself. A laid-back, ‘Jack the Lad’ character and much the lead role.
  • Sally Slapper-Diddle - King Richard's cook/housekeeper. Typical dame with as many outrageous costumes as desired.
  • Ben Cross - Tom's eldest son and a bit of a rogue.
  • Jack Cross - The second son, a cohort of his elder brother although somewhat less intelligent.
  • Chris Cross - The youngest of Tom's boys. a handsome dreamer. Principal boy.
  • Grace Cross - Ben's wife and something of a shrew.
  • Sarah Cross - Jack's wife and very much like her sister-in-law.
  • Princess Deborah – The pretty daughter of King Richard, with an independent nature. Principal girl.
  • Chester The Jester - Inept joker but loveable and kept on by the King to allow him to shine by comparison (m/f)
  • King Richard Of Ponderham - Kindly ruler who dotes on his daughter.
  • Griswald- An ogre, the terror of the neighbourhood who wishes to marry the princess, much to her father's dismay. He has a twin brother, Gregor, who only appears in the curtain calls.

Support: 1m/f

  • Page – a palace person, rather full of themselves (m/f)

Chorus of Villagers, palace servants, and a lion.

NB: The actor playing the ogres should be as tall as possible and use padding and thick soled boots to emphasise his size.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
