Two women…united in bravery.
In 1949 two of the most famous women in Britain met in a fashionable Mayfair Beauty Salon. One was actress, Anna Neagle, and the other was ex-SOE operative Odette Churchill. Under the gentle hands of their young beautician, they were to reveal the explosive secrets that neither the press nor the Gestapo ever discovered. Based on a true account of their meetings from a series of in-depth interviews with Patricia Law (nee Wade), the beautician.

‘Odette’, a major British film of the time was directed by Anna Neagle’s husband Herbert Wilcox and told the courageous story of the wartime heroine. Only four years after being liberated from Ravensbrück, Odette was advisor on the film set and guided ‘English Rose’ Anna through the painful process of taking on the very real role of a Gestapo prisoner and concentration camp inmate. During these beauty salon meetings, the play reveals the very special and lasting friendship that was formed between the film star Anna Neagle and the George Cross recipient Odette Churchill.

★★★★★ Ovation’s latest production is a
triumph of warmth and wit, powered on by three remarkable performances, seamless direction and a beautiful set to boot at Highgate’s Upstairs at The Gatehouse. Treating Odette is based on an extraordinary true story. Jennifer Selway’s script is full of painstaking research and dark humour, as well as a clear love for her characters and their bravery in their respective battles. Audiences will find it difficult not to fall for these three charming, fascinating women, in a rather charming and fascinating piece.
Laura Ellis, The Open Door

★★★★ Jennifer Selway’s three-hander 'Treating Odette' is a treat to watch.
Julia Rank, The Stage'

★★★★ Selway delivers an episodic narrative that gradually reveals the hidden personality traits of both actress and muse. And it’s a joy to see an all-female play that relies on well-defined character conflict and not over-plotted melodrama. Neil Norman, Express

★★★★Jennifer Selway’s script is engrossing and sweet. She cleverly creates such intense relationships with a cast of just three women, and it’s a nice change to see a solely female piece that revolves around friendly discussions and strong characters, instead of the usual over exaggeration. Treating Odette is a passionate play, with an interesting background, that is beautifully performed by three talented women – what more could we ask for? Naomi Penn, The Upcoming

★★★★ Selway should be raising a couple of large glasses of wine to herself for ‘Treating Odette’ is a beautiful, life-enhancing play.
Kate Pettigrew, London Pub Theatres

I thought this was brilliant – This Ovation production recalls when Anna Neagle – top British Film Star of the 40s and 50s, was playing Odette Churchill – the War Heroine who was awarded the George Cross. I highly recommend it. Deserves West End or TV follow up.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
