One Day I'll Fly Away

Cast size: 6

Duration: Two Act

Janet Shaw | Comedic Drama | Full-length | 1m, 5f

Short synopsis

One young woman, one old lady. Their paths should never have crossed but fate took a hand and threw them together in a care home in which the old lady had broken her hip and the young woman had received community service. They were more alike than anyone could begin to imagine. Both women had battled adversities beyond comprehension and in this very funny and poignant story we follow the ups and downs of their lives as mutual dislike and mistrust turns into an unusual and heart-warming friendship.

One young woman, one old lady. Their lives were poles apart but fate took a hand and threw them together. The only problem being they were more alike than anyone could begin to imagine. Both had battled adversities beyond comprehension.

When Kylie starts community service at the respite home she is thrown into the path of Nora, an embittered and hardened woman, who has spent her whole life teaching others and avoiding relationships of any kind.

Nora lost her husband and only child in a boating accident many years ago and Kylie is the victim of an alcoholic and drug-addled mother. Nora and Kylie start off their relationship with mutual comic sarcasm and dislike, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear that although in different ways, they are both walking down the same path self-destruction.

This funny and poignant story follows the ups and downs of the two women, as mutual dislike and mistrust turns into an unusual and heart-warming friendship.

The characters talk unreservedly to Gladys, an old lady who has had a stroke and cannot speak. But Gladys can hear and she begins to learn the secrets of patients and staff alike. There’s Connie, the domestic, who has an acute addiction to gossip and is struggling with her bossy and unresponsive husband, and the two nurses who are in complete denial about their feelings for one another and refuse to capitulate to their mutual attraction.

When Gladys finally regains her speech the confidences are all revealed.

This play is full of humour, pathos and sentimentality and will leave your audience laughing and crying, probably at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
