Duration: Two Act

Hilary Spiers | Comedic Drama | Full-length | 1m, 5f

Short synopsis

The bride, two friends, the mother and mother-in-law gather at a luxury spa for a very upmarket hen weekend. But jealousies, unrequited love, accidents and misunderstandings result in battle lines being drawn as Kate, the bride, finally takes control of her own destiny. A fast-moving, contemporary comedy drama, with five strong parts for women – and one very energetic man.

Kate, her bolshie left-wing best friend Lucy, her highly successful old school friend Claire, Kate’s mother Veronica and her prospective mother-in-law Audrey, have all assembled at a luxury five-star spa hotel for Kate’s hen party.

Audrey’s down to earth Northern ways have endeared her to Kate, whose relationship with her parents – and her mother in particular - has always been tricky.  But Audrey’s charms are on lost on the snobbish and overbearing Veronica who sees her as a rival who is trying to usurp Kate’s affections. All Veronica’s efforts are focused on organising the most expensive and flamboyant wedding possible, despite Kate’s expressed wishes for a small, quiet affair.

The wedding plans and celebrations are undercut with the interchanges and developing relationships between the foreign hotel staff (all of whom are played by the same actor) and their guests.

Over the course of a difficult weekend, tempers flare, animosities and prejudices are laid bare and tensions are exacerbated when the groom’s best man suffers an accident and Kate asks Lucy to step into her shoes, unaware that Lucy has been nursing a secret love for Callum, the groom, for years.

Then, with the collapse of her husband’s business and his possible arrest, Veronica’s world and marriage are turned upside down, as all her certainties crumble. But Audrey too learns that she does not always know what’s best for her son and future daughter-in-law and Kate, after years of trying to placate her mother and others in her life, finally takes control of her own destiny.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
