A Quiet Night In

Tony Edwards

Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 4

Duration: 40 - 50 mins approx

Tony Edwards | Comedy | One Act | 2m, 3f

Short synopsis

A play in the 'Frank And Aggie' series.
Money is tight in the Spratt household, so Aggie decides to stop Frank and Monica from going out every evening and squandering their money. She wants a quiet family night in, with games, stories, and a chance to speak about their precarious relationship. After much protesting from Frank and Monica, they start the games, but then the interruptions start, from telephone calls to visits from roving Evangelists. All this accumulates in so much noise and mayhem, that Aggie pays them all to go out for the night!

Aggie Spratt is getting really worried about the lack of money coming into the household. Husband Frank is out of work but spends most of his out of work allowance up the Pig and Whistle, whilst her daughter Monica contributes very little, preferring to spend her wages on ‘nights out with the boys’! When Frank’s best mate Alf calls one afternoon, Aggie discusses the situation with him. Alf advises a counsellor, but Aggie decides a simpler route. If Frank and Monica don’t go out so much, they would all save money. So, she decides that she will start with a quiet night in, when they can all play parlour games, and talk about their relationships.

When Frank and Monica hear about this plan they protest violently, but Aggie insists. Frank asks Alf to stay for moral support, telling him that they can at least watch a film on the telly – and then discovers that the telly is missing! Aggie reminds Frank in no uncertain terms that the telly was rented, and rent is another word for money – something that they lack!

They finally settle down to play games which include I Spy, Charades and Dominoes. However, it is not long before events are being constantly interrupted by the incessant ringing of the telephone. There are sales calls, complaining neighbours, and boyfriends which have Frank, Aggie and Monica jumping up and down like yo-yos. They even have a visit from roving Evangelists, but the man-mad Monica soon makes them realise that there is nothing or no one worth saving in the Spratt household!

Frank losing out to Monica in a game of dominoes is the last straw, just as mayhem breaks loose with phones and doorbells ringing all at once and everyone shouting at everyone else. Aggie can stand it no longer and gives Frank and Monica money to go out for the night. Suddenly peace reigns, and Aggie settles down with a nice cup of tea for a quiet night in… and then…!

This is another typical uproarious evening with Frank and Aggie at their conflicting best!

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
