Frederique and Jasper are care-worn and their life together after twenty-five years of marriage is both jaded and becoming uncomfortable. Their daughter, Suzette, has come to see them with her fiancé, Jake Silver, an international rock star, to plan their wedding. Suzette is very down to earth, but Jake is a typical creative musician, always thinking about something other than the conversation going on in front of him.
Frederique has invited the local vicar to meet them to begin the detailed planning, and on his arrival, all starts off well. However, the Reverend Tittle is a most careful man and always makes sure right at the start that there are no skeletons in the closet that might de-rail the proceedings later on. His investigations reveal that due to a ‘clerical error’ at their wedding, Frederique and Jasper are not actually married. Far from being upset, the newly un-married couple are delighted to find that their marriage was never legal and they are free.
However, Suzette’s wedding must come first, but an interfering member of the Press gets wind of Jake’s forthcoming nuptials and inveigles his way into the house for a scoop. They explain that the vicar is there to renew the vows of the older couple, but unfortunately, Reverend Tittle actually marries them properly. They now endeavour to act like a happy family for all they are worth and this works well enough for the reporter to leave, rushing off to his editor. Frederique and Jasper, now newly married, reflect that perhaps things haven’t been so bad and maybe they should give this new lease of married life a chance and, full of zeal, they rush off to do a bit of ‘bonding’. The Reverend, Suzette and Jake are left alone, at which point, the Reverend reveals another result of his investigation which, in a funny twist to end the play, is destined to be even more problematical.
