Stephen Bean

Genre: Drama

Cast size: 4

Duration: One Act

By Stephen Bean | Drama | One Act | 4f

Short synopsis

Mary is an over worked nurse, the daughter of a dysfunctional mother, the lover of a scrounging free loader who is only with Mary as long as the money lasts. The fact that Mary is in the bottom of a very deep rut isn’t helped by her habitual alcohol problem. We meet Mary when she realises that her life isn’t going anywhere and her dreams of going to live in ‘An Octopus’s Garden’ (her favourite song) are finally realised.

Mary is an over worked nurse, the daughter of a dysfunctional mother, the lover of a scrounging free loader who is only with Mary as long as the money lasts. The fact that Mary is in the bottom of a very deep rut isn’t helped by her habitual alcohol problem. We meet Mary when she realises that her life isn’t going anywhere and her dreams of going to live in ‘An Octopus’s Garden’ (her favourite song). are finally realised.

The action takes place in Mary’s small bed-sit flat. It is untidy. There is a single divan bed DSR; it is never neatly made up. There are various objects scattered on the floor (items of clothing, hair dryer, shoes etc…). A dressing table occupies CS. It is the type that has a mirror mounted at the back. It is angled in such a way that the audience can see Mary’s reflection. There are various items on top of the dressing table one of which is a small CD player. A small armchair is DSL. On a couple of walls hang pictures of sea creatures set in beautiful coral reefs etc…There are three doors. A door into the flat, a door off to the bathroom and a door of to the kitchen. The lighting is general indoor cover. The overall sense is that this flat is Mary’s world. Various other items may be used to dress the set. They are not used but may add to the impression that this is where she lives. (A small TV, computer etc…).

Some of the action takes place away from the flat which can be denoted by a change of lighting but using the same set. In the hospital. At the petrol station.

  • Sister Harvey (Janine) - 50’s. In charge of a busy medical ward. She gives the impression of an arm’s length manager who knows she has to be that way to run her world but not far beneath the surface is a deep concern for Mary. (f)
  • Jill - Late 20’s. Mary’s lover. Un-employed and loving it! Typical generation X. Self-centred. Is just stringing Mary along for the money. (f)
  • Grace  - Late 60’s. Mary’s mother. Gives all her attention to her younger demanding daughter. She knows that Mary needs her but there is a block between them. (f)
  • Mary - 50’s. Has certainly seen life in all its facets. Puts up a care worn and cynical front but underneath is a very damaged and vulnerable person. (f)

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
