Daphne and Rachel are two hard-working guardian angels whose respective charges seem close to the end of their mortal lives. Rachel has been looking after a young woman called Julie who, following a bad car crash, is in a coma and not expected to survive more than six months.
Daphne’s charge is an old man called Henry, irreversibly senile and not expected to live more than a few months. Rachel sees an opportunity for the two of them to have a few months ‘holiday’ living as humans.
The first thing to do is to change their angelic garments for tasty, modern clothing. Rachel suggests they simply raid Sarah’s bedroom since neither she nor anyone else is going to miss anything. The second part of their agenda is to get meeting people socially; something they have never been able to do as angels.
Rachel’s charge Julie has a nice flat which the angels decide will be a good place to live as they start their new, albeit temporary existence. However, Julie agreed to take on a lodger just before her accident, who turns out to be a smart young man called Simon. When Simon’s equally debonair friend Edward enters the fray, things seem to have turned out well for the angels. As the angels start to experience the pleasures and pressures of being human, they begin to realise there are emotional consequences to being a romantic foursome.
