My Ex

Trevor Johnson

Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 6

Duration: Two Act

Trevor Johnson | Comedy | Full-length | 3m, 3f

Short synopsis

Three couples buy a new house in a cul-de-sac on a new, up-market small estate. Soon afterwards Paul & Penelope hold a dinner party for the other four: Andy & Susie and Geoffrey & Alice. Trouble is, that Paul & Susie were previously married to each other, as were Geoffrey & Penelope and Andy & Alice. All have been divorced and have not seen each other for three of four years, which could make for an interesting conversation during the meat course.

Three couples Paul and Penelope, Andy and Susie, and Geoffrey and Alice have recently moved into a cul-de-sac on an estate of mock-Georgian houses. Paul and Penelope invite the others to a ‘get-to-know-each-other’ dinner party. From the beginning all six people know, for individual reasons, that there is something unusual about the evening.

Penelope is determined to create the right impression. She is sure invitation cards with gold lettering, vintage champagne, and a chef to cook dinner will say wealth and class sophistication. Paul comes from ‘old money’ so doesn’t need to impress. He does what Penelope tells him but takes opportunities to have a sly ‘dig’ at her when other people are there.

Andy runs his own catering company and thinks he’s God’s gift to women, and immediately flirts with Penelope, something that she pretends not to find flattering. Susie likes jewellery and clothes. She met Andy in the cocktail bar of the 'Club For Gentlemen And Their Friends' where she worked.

Alice teaches psychology at the university. She is worried about leaving her daughter with an inexperienced babysitter. Geoffrey is a professor of chemistry and is normally shy in the company of strangers.

As separate conversations develop before and after dinner the past lives of the six people are slowly revealed, to the horror of some and the delight of others. All have been divorced for five years. Penelope was married to Geoffrey, Alice was married to Andy, and Susie was married to Paul. At the end of the evening the partners know, but the others don’t.

  • Paul - 43, weak, easily domineered (in fact prefers it), does not care about material possessions (because he has always had them)

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
