Too Many Brides For Dracula

Ron Nicol

Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 11

Duration: 50 mins approx

Ron Nicol | Comedy | One Act | 3m, 7f, 1m/f

Short synopsis

Loosely based on Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. Jonathan visits Transylvania to meet Count Dracula and returns a changed man. He marries Mina, but when Dracula also arrives in England, Mina’s best friend Lucy mysteriously becomes ill. Doctor van Helsing is sent for, and suspects that Dracula has caused Lucy’s illness. She determines to track the Count to his lair, and after much confusion – and a great deal of hilarity - Dracula is defeated.

In Transylvania, Jonathan Harker meets a young woman who warns him against visiting Castle Dracula. Count Dracula appears and signs documents making him the owner of Carfax Estate. In England, Mina Murray tells Lucy Westenra about Jonathan while Mina raves about her handsome friend Arthur.

In Transylvania Jonathan shows Dracula a picture of Mina, which the Count steals. When Jonathan falls asleep, three of Dracula’s vampire brides appear – one the young woman Jonathan had met. They’re about to bite Jonathan when Dracula bursts in and stops them. Ancient Mrs Swales warns Mina and Lucy that death is coming – and then dies herself, while in the castle, Dracula’s Brides drag Jonathan off.

In England, Lucy has been having strange dreams, and Jonathan has been behaving oddly since his return. Arthur visits, telling Mrs Westenra that Doctor van Helsing, an expert in strange diseases, will visit and examine Lucy.

That night, Dracula meets Mina and bites her neck. Van Helsing arrives and sees the bite. Mina and Mrs Westenra take Lucy back to the house, while van Helsing explains his fears to Arthur. That night the Count meets Jonathan, who falls under Dracula’s spell.

The next morning van Helsing distributes crosses to everyone, giving Lucy a garlic wreath to wear. Jonathan is unable to take a cross. Realising that Jonathan is controlled by Dracula, van Helsing sends everyone back to the house.

That night, Dracula again meets Lucy, and the following morning Lucy tries to bite Arthur. Van Helsing prevents her, saying he must drive a stake through Lucy’s heart. Mrs Westenra is bitten by Lucy, who escapes. Van Helsing determines that Dracula must be found. A series of confused and confusing attempts by those who have been bitten to bite the unbitten ensues, with Dracula’s Brides joining in.

Dracula eventually gains the upper hand, but with the arrival of morning is turned into dust. Victory seems to be complete, but as van Helsing addresses the audience, everyone surrounds him, ready to bite.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
