Scoundrels and Stratagems

Ron Nicol

Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 9

Duration: 50 mins approx

Ron Nicol | Comedy | One Act | 4m, 5f

Short synopsis

Lady Pinchbeck plans to acquire Charity’s inheritance, with the doubtful help of Gosling. Squire Buzzard wants to win the hand of Prudence, but she’s in love with Gerald, so Buzzard plots to discredit his rival. Lamprey has schemes of her own. Sergeant Quickly and Constable Muggins become involved when Charity disappears and suspicion falls on Gerald. After a great deal of confusion and a lot of hilarity, Prudence takes a hand and everything is resolved.

When Squire Buzzard calls to see Lady Pinchbeck with a proposition, she believes he intends to marry her, but Buzzard’s intention is to propose to Pinchbeck’s step-daughter Prudence. Pinchbeck intends to dispose of her ward Charity to acquire her inheritance and asks housekeeper Lamprey for help.

Prudence rejects Buzzard’s proposal as she’s in love with Buzzard’s estate manager Gerald. Buzzard determines to discredit his rival, telling Sergeant Quickly that Gerald is embezzling money. Lamprey has been eavesdropping and suggests an alliance with Buzzard. Prudence overhears this, tells Gerald, and they decide to elope, meeting in the garden at midnight.

Lady Pinchbeck involves her slow-witted companion Gosling in her plans, and when Lamprey tells her she’s found someone to carry out the ‘disposal’ of Charity and introduces a heavily disguised Buzzard, the conspirators make their plans.

The plotters meet in the garden at midnight. Pinchbeck hands Charity over to Buzzard – but is spotted by Gerald. Prudence arrives with the news that Charity has disappeared. Quickly and Constable Muggins try to arrest Gerald, but he escapes. Lamprey instigates the arrest of Prudence, hoping that this will make Gerald give himself up.

The disguised Buzzard has taken Charity into the woods to ‘dispose’ of her, but she escapes. Quickly and Muggins have been suspicious and have not taken Prudence to prison. Charity finds them and explains what’s going on. When Buzzard arrives in pursuit of Charity, he’s arrested and taken to Pinchbeck Hall.

Quickly, Charity, Prudence, Muggins and the disguised Buzzard arrive at the Hall, but Pinchbeck pretends ignorance until Buzzard reveals all. Prudence outlines a solution to the problem which involves the arrest of nobody at all. Buzzard makes a grand speech and exits in fury, Lamprey is dismissed, the police depart and Prudence and Gerald plan for the future.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
