Duration: 110 mins approx

David Challenger & Adam J Watts | Comedy | Full-length | 5m, 3f

Short synopsis

Harry, a Falklands war veteran in a residential home, is determined to beat the system. With the help of several other ageing residents they use their military training to try and change the home for the better. Like any ‘mission’ there are some snags along the way. Namely Eva who runs the home and just-so-happens to be married to an Argentinian! There is also the handyman Lance, who claims to be American. Will his scams land the latest resident in hot water? Or will the pair simply rub each other up the wrong way? Mishap follows mishap as the plot unfolds. Will Harry succeed? Does the home survive it’s threatened closure? Can Eva and Harry ever make their peace?

This hilarious first play by David Challenger & Adam J Watts centres around one man’s misguided attempts to take on the management of a home for the elderly.

Reluctantly put into the accommodation by his son, Harry - a Falklands war veteran - uses his military training, along with the help of two other ex- army residents, to try and beat the system.  This newly-formed band of brothers meet considerable resistance from Eva, the manageress who just-so-happens to be married to an Argentinean! Just when Harry thought things couldn’t get any worse...

Enter the underhanded handyman, Lance, who proclaims to be an American, but is far from what he actually seems. Some might call him a fixer, but that isn’t necessarily the word Harry has in mind, as he and the 'mixer' take an instant dislike to one another.

Mishap follows mishap, but our protagonist is a determined man, even if he is handicapped by his chums. Despite everything, Harry will become a hero when he thwarts the impending closure of the retirement home. The icing on the cake comes in the form of ousting Lance as an impostor.

Every page of this comedy play has a titter or a full-blown belly laugh and there are twists and turns to keep the audience engaged. The characters are real and in places carry the underlying message of sincerity that is so often just beneath the surface when considering the latter years of life.

Welcome to ‘Adelphi Lodge’. We hope you enjoy your stay...

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
