After discovering the body of her boyfriend John, who has been stabbed to death in his flat, Julia Fraser becomes the prime suspect in a murder case.
She seeks refuge at the home of her ex-over James and his wife Delia. Suspicious of James’ motives to help Julia out in her hour of need, Delia invites her ex-husband, psychiatrist Miles Barnaman over to the house, in what James considers to be an act of ‘tit for tat’.
It turns out that relations between James and Delia are rather strained and their marriage is not a match made in heaven. James appears to have retained very strong feelings for Julia who soon finds herself to be in more trouble when she discovers a bloodied knife in her bed in the very house where she has sought safety.
Inspector Sally Rudge is called to the house to investigate and when she reveals that Delia’s car registration was noted leaving the scene of Julia’s boyfriend’s murder, Delia becomes implicated. On revealing that he diagnosed Delia to be suffering from schizophrenia some years earlier, Miles appears to increase the pressure on her even further. Her apparent unease over James’ feelings for Julia coupled with her mental instability, suggest that Delia may have tried to set Julia up to exact her revenge.
Deeply embedded jealousies and revenge surface as the plot twists to implicate the most unlikely suspect. Then the police make an arrest and one man is left with the evidence to save his wife, but will he use it? Perhaps someone else’s set up is just what he’s been looking for, but will it save him or kill him too?
