Short synopsis

A gentle comedy set in the 1980s in sunny St Andrews (Scotland), the home of golf. The McDowell family try to rent out their council house to people attending the Open Golf Championship, but their plans go awry and there is chaos as they all try to stay in the house and hide from the visitors. Peace comes at the last minute as young David McDowell proposes to his long-suffering girlfriend and all – visitors and family – can celebrate.

This is the prequel to 'Hotel Bon Vista' but works well on its own. It is set in the 1980s in St Andrews, Scotland – ‘The Home of Golf’. Thousands of visitors are about to descend on the town for the Open Golf Championship. Like many locals, the McDowells decide to rent out their council house to visitors to earn some money. They plan to stay in an Uncle’s caravan.

At the centre of the story are single-mum Edith McDowell and her rather slow son David. He has been going out with girlfriend Sharon for years, but romantic progress is slow. It is not helped by by his grumpy Gran and straight-laced Aunt.

At the last minute, the plans are spoiled when they can’t get the caravan. David tries to stay in the house and keep away from the English visitors. There is confusion – for visitors and David - during the night when an attractive young woman also tries to stay in the house. Sharon sees David with the other woman, there are tears and her fierce mother appears on the scene.  In the end David proposes to Sharon and peace is restored in the neighbourhood.

NOTES:

ST ANDREWS is a small town on the east coast of Scotland - famed for the University and as the Home of Golf. Every five years or so the British Open Golf Championship is held in St Andrews. At this time thousands of visitors arrive to watch the golf. In the 1980s, when this play is set, there were insufficient hotels in the area to house the visitors and so locals were encouraged to rent out their house for the week, and many did – earning money to pay for a holiday elsewhere.  This still happens now, but to a much lesserxtent as new hotels have been built

ACCENTS

The play is set in Scotland, and the speeches of the Scottish characters have Scots rhythms.  If you are not playing to a Scottish audience then don’t overdo the accents – the main thing is to tell the story and have fun. Then the audience will too.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
