Christine Foster | Black Comedy | Full-length | 2m,2f

Short synopsis

In the sweltering summer of 1665, the Black Death sweeps through London. Prisoners in Newgate, believing they are doomed, indulge in drunkenness and debauchery. But a young alchemist believes he has a sure-fire remedy and begs his cellmates to help him make it. Unfortunately, the missing ingredient is gold, something they have no hope of obtaining without the only currencies they have at their disposal: sex, wit and lies.

In 1665, London was a merry place.  Five years after the Restoration of Charles II the city had turned its back on Puritanism and re-embraced brothels, theatre, gambling and bear baiting.

Then, almost as if it were a judgement, the Black Death swept in, the worst outbreak since the 1300’s, with at least a third of London wiped out within a year.  Those who could afford it fled to the country, including the royal court, while doctors and quacks desperately blended herbs, and bonfires burned on every corner to “purify” the air.  No one knew how the contagion was spread, no one knew how to stop it.

Matthias, an alchemist, has bankrupted himself trying to find a cure and has been thrown into prison for debt.  There he is joined by Hannah, a crafty plague nurse, held for raising a riot, and a young, pregnant thief, Jennet, who is sentenced to hang as soon as her babe is born.  All three of them are busy plotting against each other when the pestilence arrives in Newgate.

While the other inmates - believing they are doomed - indulge in debauchery and drunkenness and the macabre Dance of Death, Matthias begs his cellmates to help him make his sure-fire remedy.  Unfortunately, the missing ingredient is gold - something they have no hope of obtaining without resorting to the only currencies they do have: sex, wit and lies.  When the potion fails and the last turnkey dies, they find they are suddenly able to walk free - but with a thousand victims a day dying on the streets outside perhaps they would do better to bar the door, stay put, and survive - if they can survive each other.

'Four Thieves Vinegar' explores the lengths that ordinary people might go to in order to survive and which elements of the human spirit remain indestructible, whether the disaster they face is three hundred and fifty years ago, or today.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
