Aladdin (Nicol)

Duration: Two Act

Ron Nicol | Pantomime | 4m, 4f, 7m/f+ Chorus

Short synopsis

Aladdin falls in love with the daughter of the Sultana of China, but his dreams of marrying the Princess seem hopeless. The magician Abanazer asks him to obtain a magic lamp from a subterranean cavern, but leaves him trapped underground. Aladdin escapes from the cave, acquires great wealth, and marries the Princess. Abanazer steals the lamp and carries Badroulboudour off. All ends happily when Aladdin regains both the Lamp and his lovely Princess.

Widow Twankey’s son Aladdin falls in love with Princess Badroulboudour, despite warnings from Twankey’s assistant Wishee Washee that it could lead to problems as Aladdin is only a poor assistant in Twankey’s laundry.

Abanazer is an evil magician planning to gain treasure which is hidden in an orchard. He meets See Yu, Hu Mee and Mee Tu, and employs them to help with his plans. The Sultana chastises her daughter, wishing her to be more ladylike, and hearing that Aladdin has been looking up at windows in the palace hoping to catch sight of the Princess, warns her to be wary. The Princess confides her feelings to her maid So Shy. That night See Yu, Hu Mee and Mee Tu meet So Shy in the palace garden but are chased away by the Executioner.

Abanazer introduces himself as Aladdin’s Uncle, and during a dinner party ruined by Wishee Washee’s attempts at hospitality, tempts Twankey into selling the orchard. Abanazer and Aladdin meet there and Abanazer casts a spell, giving Aladdin a ring he says will protect him. Aladdin enters a mysterious cavern and finds the lamp Abanazer wants, but refuses to hand it over until he gets out of the cavern. Abanazer casts another spell and imprisons him.

Aladdin accidentally summons the Slave of the Ring and escapes from the cave, taking the Lamp with him. Discovering the power of the Lamp, Aladdin summons the Genie of the Lamp, visits the Sultana and gains her permission to marry Princess Badroulboudour. Just as things appear be settled, Abanazer steals the Lamp and carries the Princess off to Africa. Helped by the Slave and the Genie, Aladdin regains both the Lamp and his lovely Princess.

This version of “Aladdin” has been described as ‘enjoyable and uplifting’.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
