Beauty And The Beast (Gardner)

Bruce Gardner

Genre: Pantomime

Cast size: 14 +Chorus

Duration: Two Act

Bruce Gardner | Pantomime | Full-length | 7m, 3f, 4m/f +Chorus

Short synopsis

A fun panto following Jack up the beanstalk!

Wealthy shipping merchant Philip Pelf has a large family. There’s Lynette, his beautiful youngest daughter (Beauty), her older sisters, Marilyn and Caroline (who try to outdo any of Cinderella’s ugly sisters), and the three sons, Paul Mark & Eddie.

The family faces poverty when all but one of their merchant ships are lost in a storm at sea. Philip travels in an attempt to salvage the last ship and on his way home, lost and tired he seeks shelter in the secluded castle of the Beast (a bewitched Prince Robin) whom he manages to upset by cutting a rose from the garden. Incensed at this ‘theft’ the Beast will only allow him to leave if he promises to send one of his daughters back to live in the castle.

Beauty takes pity on the Beast and travels to the castle, where she finds that she actually likes the life there and when, through a magic mirror, she sees her father is unhappy, she persuades the Beast to allow her to go home for a week. Returning with Philip she realises that she is in love with the Beats and kisses him, at which he transforms into the handsome Prince Robin.

That all sounds quite familiar, but comedy complications are thrown into the mix by the Beasts servants, Jenny Jessop (the Dame) and her son, Tony Treasure who look after their master in ways that only happen in pantomimes.

7m, 3f, 4m/f + Chorus

The Pelf Family 4m, 3f

  • Philip - The head of the family. A kind and generous merchant who falls on hard times. However, his misfortunes do not embitter him as he strives to overcome them. He loves all of his children, but has a particular soft spot for Lynette, whom he calls Beauty. (m)
  • Lynette (Beauty) - Loving and lovely, youngest daughter of the family. Willing to aid anyone in their duties whenever it is needed. (f)
  • Marilyn & Caroline - Beauty's sisters. Greedy, vain and self-satisfying. Always contemptuous of Beauty's relationship with others. (2f)
  • Paul, Mark & Eddie - The sons of the family. Three strong, industrious young men who, when faced with adversity, knuckle down and show the same qualities as Lynette.(3m).

The Outsiders 3m

  • Jenny Jessop - A much married woman now down on her luck and ready to accept any work wherever it is to. be found. A typical pantomime dame. (m)
  • Tony Treasure - Jenny's son from an earlier marriage. Irrepressible and tries hard to please. Something of a fool, but has endearing qualities. (m)
  • Prince Robin (Beast) - Under a spell from a wicked fairy, he lives a life in the shadows, shunning all company. He has certain magical abilities of his own but only the love of a beautiful girl will end his suffering. He should be portrayed with as fearsome a maned mask as possible. Clawed animal paws will aid his 'beastly' make up and bear out certain references in the story line. (May be played by either sex, but is in effect the principal boy, revealed at the end to be a handsome prince). (m/f)

Others 4m/f plus chorus

  • Fortune Teller (m/f)
  • Baker (m/f)
  • Butcher (m/f)
  • Greengrocer (m/f)

Chorus of servants, villagers, country folk, together with a messenger, doctor & vet. (NB. Chorus parts are numbered for convenience and
may be taken by any member as seen fit by the Director).

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
