Short synopsis

Dick Whittington arrives in London to seek his fortune, accompanied by his Cat. Employed by Alderman Fitzwarren, he falls in love with Fitzwarren’s daughter Alice. He falls foul of Queen Rat Imperia, who employs Fester, Mildew and Fungus to discredit him, and he’s wrongfully accused of theft. Sarah, Jackie and the Cat manage to prove his innocence. Dick joins an expedition to the Barbary Coast, where he finds fame and fortune and wins Alice Fitzwarren’s hand.

Dick Whittington arrives in London to seek his fortune, accompanied by his faithful Cat, but Queen Rat Imperia has plans to ruin him, despite warnings from Fairy Nuff. Imperia employs malicious Fester to keep watch on Whittington. Vagabonds Mildew and Fungus try to steal a scooter belonging to Jackie, trader Alderman Fitzwarren’s servant, and are chased off by Jackie and the alderman’s housekeeper Sarah. Dick meets Alice, Fitzwarren’s daughter, and is eventually employed by Fitzwarren. Meanwhile, Mildew and Fungus have been bullied by Fester into taking part in a plot to discredit Dick. The three steal money from Fitzwarren’s shop, thereby managing to get Dick sacked. Dick is about to leave London, but Dick’s Cat has seen the theft and Fairy Nuff tells him to turn back, saying that he’ll become Lord Mayor.

Mildew and Fungus are regretting their association with Fester and eventually confess their involvement to Sarah and Jackie. Dick is welcomed back by Fitzwarren and agrees to take part in an expedition to the far East. Dick, Sarah, Jackie and his Cat set sail on board the saucy Cuttlefish with Captain Coracle, the Mate, Mildew, Fungus and an all-female crew, but Fester also creeps on board. The ship runs aground. Sarah and Jackie are captured by the Sultan, but when Dick, Coracle, the Mate and Crew arrive at the court, they are set free and a great feast is planned.

Following Imperia’s commands, rats invade the Sultan’s court and take all the food, but following a fierce fight Dick’s Cat chases them away. Dick is left alone and is confronted by Fester, but rescued by Mildew and Fungus. Everyone returns home and all ends happily.

Described in ‘Amateur Stage’ as a loyal version of a well-loved story, with Queen Rat as a great role, productions have been a great success, playing to packed houses.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
