Short synopsis

Malena tries to lose Hansel and Gretel in the forest, despite the protests of their father Hans. Her first attempt fails, so she engages incompetent duo Whibley and Wobbley to dispose of the children. Wicked witch Grizella captures the children and puts Hansel in a cage. Gretel manages to trick Grizella, and she and Hans escape. With the help of the friendly forest birds the children eventually return home.

Fairies Twigg, Sparkle and Twinkle introduce the story, and appear with with updates at intervals. Hansel and Gretel live in the forest with their father Hans and step-mother Malena. Because of their poverty, Malena intends to take the children into the woods and leave them there. Hans disagrees, but is forced to go along with Malena’s plan. Hansel and Gretel discover this and make plans of their own. Meanwhile, ancient witch Grizella, who lives in the forest with her pet magpie Maggie, also has plans – to take the children and eat them. She and Malena meet and discover that both can gain what they want.

Malena abandons Hansel and Gretel in the forest, despite the protests of their father Hans, but Hansel has left a trail of pebbles and the children find their way home. Malena engages incompetent duo Whibley and Wobbley to help dispose of the children. Hansel and Gretel are again abandoned in the forest, but this time Grizella captures them and puts Hansel in a cage.

Unable to leave a trail of pebbles, Hansel had made do with using crumbs instead, which forest birds Sparra, Burdie and Corbie find. Meanwhile Whibley and Wobbley have become lost in the woods, and unable to find the children, have abandoned their task. Gretel manages to trick Grizella, she and Hans escape, and with the help of the friendly forest birds the children eventually return home.

Eventually it’s revealed that in the past Grizella had cast a spell on Malena making her dislike her family, but this spell is finally broken by the intervention of Twigg, Sparkle and Twinkle.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
