Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 18

Duration: Two Act

Dougie Blaxland | Comedy | Full-length | 5m, 5f, 3m/f; 2m jnr, 3f jnr

Short synopsis

A parody of Shakespearean tragedy that draws together updated versions of the plots of Macbeth, Hamlet & King Lear, Mac Hamlear is a perfect choice for theatre companies looking to stage community productions. Set in London’s East End and featuring such characters as Mac and Beth (husband and wife owners of a local butcher’s shop) and Ken Lear (landlord of the Kings Head) Mac Hamlear has been described as “side splitting” and “simply great fun”.

Commissioned by the Theatre Royal Bath for the Shakespeare Unplugged Festival 2011 Mac Hamlear is a Shakespearean spoof interweaving updated versions of the plots of Macbeth, Hamlet & King Lear in a farcical comedy that has all the ingredients of a soap opera. Featuring Mac and Beth (husband and wife owners of a local butcher’s shop) Ken Lear (landlord of the Kings Head), newly weds Claude and Gertrude Elsinore (whose son

Hamlet is on anti depressants), the three story lines are gradually drawn together as the fate of all three families is determined at The King’s Head in the climactic scene of Ken Lear’s retirement party. Described as “a seamless and side-splitting combination of the three great tragedies” that is “quite simply, great fun” Mac Hamlear is a large cast comedy perfect for community productions.

Theatre Royal Bath - 2011
Bath Chronicle - Machamlear: A Hilariously Grand Shakespearean Mash-Up!
Machamlear
, the ambitious and wildly entertaining new production by the Theatre Royal Bath's Engage Company, proved to be the undisputed highlight of the Shakespeare Unplugged Festival at The Egg Theatre. Writer Dougie Blaxland and director Heidi Vaughan have achieved something truly ingenious: a seamless and side-splitting combination of the three great tragedies—Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear—with results that had the sold-out audience roaring with laughter.

This is Shakespeare stripped down and amped up, retaining the core dramatic beats while layering on elements of farce and incredibly clever wordplay. The plot careers wonderfully between the murderous ambition of the Scottish Thane, the existential angst of the Danish Prince, and the heart-breaking folly of the aged King, all colliding on one chaotic stage. The comedic payoff comes from the unexpected interactions and the modern, witty dialogue that undercuts the high drama of the source material.

The sheer scale of the production is impressive. Featuring a huge cast, the stage was alive with energy, enthusiasm, and superb comic timing. The large ensemble navigated the complex, interwoven narrative with remarkable clarity, ensuring that even Shakespeare novices could keep up with the chaotic fun.

Machamlear is, quite simply, great fun. The performance was not just well-received; it was a phenomenon. The energy in the theatre was electric, culminating in a well-deserved and spontaneous standing ovation from the entire house.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
