Mansfield Park (adapted from Jane Austen by Tim Luscombe)

Tim Luscombe

Genre: Drama

Cast size: 8

Duration: 100 mins approx

Tim Luscombe | Drama | Full-length | 4m, 4f or 9m, 7f

Short synopsis

An enchanting and stylish drama about love,
hope and human resolve.

Unceremoniously uprooted from her humble family home, intelligent young Fanny Price is dropped into the bustling, aristocratic household of her uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, where she finds herself buffeted from one crisis to the next in the company of her cousins and their well-to-do friends. Yet throughout this turmoil, one thing remains a constant – her love for the generous, worthy and steadfast Edmund Bertram.

Can Fanny triumph over her adoptive family’s demands and follow her heart to acquire the husband and life she so desires and deserves?

4m, 4f or 9m, 7f

Mansfield Park can be performed by 8 actors multi-rolling or it can have a larger cast of up to 16

  • Fanny Price (f)
  • Mary Crawford / Betsey Price (f)
  • Maria Bertram / Susan Price (f)
  • Mrs Norris / Mrs Price (f)
  • Henry Crawford / Dick Price (m)
  • Edmund Bertram / Charley Price (m)
  • Tom Bertram / Mr Rushworth / William Price (m)
  • Sir Thomas Bertram / Mr Price (m)

Henry isn’t handsome but he's attractive. Ideally, he’s short (5’ 8”). If that’s not achievable in casting, cut the references to his height. Mr Rushworth is a comic dullard. Maria (probably pronounced ‘Mar-eye-a’ to help distinguish her from Mary) is beautiful, blond and well-formed, while Mary is smaller and prettier, and probably a brunette. Edmund isn't witty but musn’t be a ‘formal,
solemn lecturer’ either. Fanny is petite and delicate, with ‘a sort of beauty that grows on one’ as Mary says. When casting and playing Fanny, avoid piety and self-pity. While saying little, Fanny’s reaction to things is all-important. As often as not, it’s others’ vices that suggest her virtue.

**** The Daily Telegraph - 'Tim Luscombe's adaptation of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds has all the shiny qualities of a piece penned yesterday. It reveals Austen not as a prissy creator of romantic fiction, but as a moral satirist of enormous stature; the real and unexpected voice of an age that’s gone'.

**** What's On Stage

The Stage - 'It is much to the credit of Tim Luscombe’s crisp new version of the tale that we are kept intrigued throughout and the highest praise is to say that, while we all know that there is a book in the background, we remain unaware of it'.

Libby Purvis, The Times
- 'I was enchanted'.
Theatre World -
'Riveting Adaptation'.
East Anglia Daily Times  - 'A Slick new adaptation'.

Jan Jones blogspot - 'Brilliant. The paring down of the text brought out the humour of the book.

East Anglian Daily Times - 'Tim Luscombe has done a fantastic job reducing this lengthy novel down to a swift two hours on stage, injecting some well judged humour along the way, and making this a story about the games that people play'.

Bury Free Press - 'Tim Luscombe’s marvellous adaptation captured the story’s drama without omitting the author’s wit or quirky character details'.

Eastern Daily Press - 'Tim Luscombe’s adaptation of this 200-year old novel turns out to be an enthralling fast-flowing drama'.

Austen Only - 'Tim Luscombe’s adaptation of Mansfield Park is fast-paced, intelligent and witty, retaining the best of the dialogue and action from Jane Austen’s novel. To manage to portray the main themes of the novel in an economical but exciting manner is a triumph'.

The Public Reviews - 'Tim Luscombe’s new adaptation keeps the flavour of Austen’s original while maintaining a swift pace. Austen’s novel is always respected but it never overwhelms'.

About My Area - 'Tim Luscombe is Austen’s champion. Mansfield Park is riveting, absorbing, and created with much love, affection and, above all, intelligence'.

More information

The play should be performed with the absolute minimum of physical scene changes, to give as filmic effect as possible. It should flow or jump effortlessly from one scene to the next. Scenically, something fluid that does for everything would be more fun and much more use than sets that have to be moved about and which would slow things down.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
