The Interview

Jane France

Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 2

Duration: 50 mins approx

Jane France | Comedy | One Act | 1m, 1f

Short synopsis

Elderly, infirm and somewhat eccentric; Agnes Braithwaite is about to be interviewed for a local radio show. Local radio presenter Gerry Mortimer is excited to meet Agnes as he is certain that he is on cue for national recognition and acclaim if he can just manage to acquire that one special interview. He is hoping that today might just be that day... It isn’t.

After a lifetime of keeping herself busy with high days, stay at home holidays and village fetes Agnes Braithwaite has outlived her siblings and is now elderly, ailing and pretty much housebound. Now needing a walking stick for even the shortest distance she refuses to let it get her down and combats the possible loneliness that old age and infirmity can bring in her own inimitable style.

Enter Gerry Mortimer. A local radio presenter who thinks he is far too good to be 'stuck out in the sticks'. He has an ambition that may be beyond his talents. Looking for that 'one special interview' that will raise him to national fame and acclaim he is excited about visiting Agnes to interview her for the local dialect feature his station is planning on running.

Tea and scones loom large in Agnes’ life and she does her best to sway Gerry to their glories whilst Gerry tries again and again to get the interview on track. Misunderstandings and cross-purposes abound during Gerry’s initial conversations with Agnes; leading to a final reveal that leaves Gerry reeling… and Agnes chuckling as only she can.

A gentle comedy, this play would be appropriate for a festival entry or an evening of short play presentations.

(1m, 1f)

  • Alice Braithwaite - 70s, physically restricted but mentally sharp with a rather wicked sense of humour
  • Gerry Mortimer - 40ish, very convinced of his own importance

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
