Short synopsis

'The Pied Piper' is part of the Ron Nicol's Short Plays For Young People Collection which have been used for many years in schools and evening classes to introduce young people aged from eight to sixteen to the performance of plays and pantomimes - and people of more advanced years have had fun with them too.

'The Pied Piper' is sold as part of 'Ron Nicol's Short Plays for Young People' Collection but can be licenced separately or together with one or two of the other plays in the collection.

Each play from this collection has been used for many years in schools and evening classes to introduce young people aged from eight to sixteen to the performance of plays and pantomimes - and people of more advanced years have had fun with them too. It can easily be performed in a classroom or on a stage, and could be produced as separate items or put on together as a complete evening of entertainment.

David Muncaster, Amateur Stage New Plays Review
"With a running time of only around twenty minutes and opportunities for a sing song, a 'behind you' and an 'oh-no- she-hasn't' '
Goldilocks and the Three Bears' manages to squeeze all our pantomime favourites into a furry little package which will serve as a great introduction to the genre for young children.

The same is true of 'The Great Christmas Pudding Recipe Robbery', which has more 'Oh No's' and 'Oh Yes's' than you can shake a tickling stick at.

In 'The Pied Piper' Ron Nicol has avoided the temptation to change the traditional story to provide a happy ending. We are left with one lonely child on stage reminding us of the moral of the story.

This collection is a little different from the usual pantomime offerings providing the opportunity to perform the short plays in a classroom or even, perhaps, at a children's party."

More information

Ron Nicol’s Short Plays for Young People (formerly Pocked-Sized Plays) can be performed on a stage, in a school hall, a class-room, or any convenient space.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears has only one simple setting, while The Great Christmas Pudding Recipe Robbery has three – Granny’s Kitchen, Bogle Wood and Greedy’s hideout, but nothing elaborate is required. If desired the Forest and the Wood can be suggested by children representing trees by holding cut-out leaves or in some other simple way.

The Pied Piper is slightly more complicated, requiring more rehearsal to produce the necessary effects.

Recorded sound effects can be used, or could be done live.

Costumes can be almost anything available, and the few properties are easy to find or make. Furniture and properties are minimal, and lighting need only be used if it’s available – even switching the room lighting on and off as required could add something to the effect.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
