Tie Break

Genre: Comedy

Cast size: 9

Duration: Two Act

Nick Broadhead | Comedy | Full-length | 4m, 4f, 1m/f

Short synopsis

When 94 year old Vincent arrives at Clive and Ann's house arm in arm with 21 year old Melanie, and it's announced they are engaged, everybody suspects of her of being a gold-digger. After she leaves, they discuss theories as to how she could 'bump the old codger off' without getting caught. Later, a policeman arrives to quiz them on the sudden demise of Vincent.. Is he all that he seems though? What does he say when the real Vincent arrives?

Wisecracking, practical joker and quizmaster extraordinaire, Clive Quest, is preparing for the final of the 'Pub Quizmaster Of The Year' competition. His partner, Ann McAnn is less than enthusiastic, especially as her twenty-one year old daughter, Melanie, has just announced her engagement to a ninety-four year old multi-millionaire, Vincent Raven. Fortunately, Ann has an old school friend, Roger Morton who is providing her with a listening ear (and possibly more).

All suspect that Melanie only intends to marry Vincent for the money. They wonder if she has ideas about bumping off her intended, and discuss amongst themselves ways that they would try to accomplish this.

As Clive is about to leave for the competition, Inspector Flume, arrives with the news of the sad demise of Vincent Raven. Roger stands in for Clive at the quiz, whilst Flume begins his interrogation of the suspects, beginning with Melanie. Nobly, Clive intervenes and confesses, although he is totally ignorant of how Raven has died.

Just as Clive is being arrested, Roger returns from the quiz, his clothes torn and nursing a black eye. He is accompanied by Sylvia, a woman he has met at the quiz. Roger explains that a fracas was caused by his tie break question, but more importantly he introduces a mysterious stranger, someone else he met at the quiz and who is instrumental in resolving the issue of Vincent Raven's disappearance.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
