Nicholas McInerny | Drama | One Act | 2m, 1f

Short synopsis

A young and impressionable Priest, Henry Cobb, has just finished a Funeral on a bitterly cold February afternoon when he is confronted by Simone. At first, he has no idea why she stands before him in the Vestry and tries to placate her. But then he learns she was the partner to Duke, a violent criminal whom he visited in prison leading up to his suicide. Simone wants to know if anything he said to Duke led to him taking his own life – and the two are set for a harsh and brutally tender revelation.

Henry Cobb tries to rub the warmth back into his hands. He has just presided over a funeral in which he has gone through the motions. Now he is enjoying a moment’s respite when he is confronted by Simone, oblivious to the cold and almost relishing it.

She watched Henry take his funeral, and for a moment, Henry mistakes her for a mourner. She is, but not for the coffin just lowered in the ground. No, Simone was Duke’s lover, a charismatic and violent criminal who has recently committed suicide in prison by hanging himself with electrical cable.

She heard Henry visited Duke, and now she wants to know what might have made Duke take his life. She believes Henry may have the answer. Under her persistent questioning, Henry dances around his relationship with the guarded Duke, admitting they met on many occasions. But Simone is convinced that something Henry said unlocked a depth of self-loathing in Duke he felt unable to live with.

Henry suggests they pray, in order to calm an increasingly fractious atmosphere. As they do so, Duke is summoned from memory to explain the circumstances of the brutal murder he was found guilty of, which involves admitting to repressed gay sexual desires he cannot handle, and so found release in violence.

Simone is left with only scraps of intimacy that bind her to Duke and, as she finally leaves Henry, the ghost of Duke emerges out of the falling snow.

Frequently asked questions

Can we try before we buy?

Of course! All our plays and pantomimes have a free Preview Script available for download as an A4 pdf file that contains 60-75% of the full script. If you like what you read then you can buy an inexpensive e-script of the entire play (typically less than half the cost of a traditional printed script) which is licensed to you for your personal use. Purchasing a script copying licence allows you to make just enough copies to support rehearsals and performances.

All our musicals are included in our perusal service. Through this, representatives of producing organisations can request a USB Stick of perusal material  which comprise the script/libretto and piano/vocal score as PDF files; a Cast (or Studio) Recording as MP3 files and (where available) an MP4 file video of either the premiere production or of a subsequent production.

Some titles have the facility to read the entire script online on our website.

Do we need a Licence To Perform?

The simple answer is, yes.

Under the international laws of copyright, you must be in possession of a valid, unexpired licence before performing any piece of theatre unless the owner or managers of the copyright has waived their rights.

Why do you insist on providing a formal royalties quotation?

When you request a quotation, it is logged in our system, it forms part of an orderly queue and protects your place in that queue should multiple licensing requests occur for the same show.
